Car theft is at an all-time high making it more important than ever to be vigilant about protecting your vehicle. Kia and Hyundai vehicles surpassed full size pickups from the top spots, experiencing the highest rates of theft in 2023, many attributing this to social media trends that gave step-by-step instructions to steal specific models. With this unsettling trend in mind, here are some things to know to help safeguard your vehicle from becoming a target.
The most stolen cars have changed in recent years
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), full size pickups used to consistently top the list every year as America’s Most Stolen Vehicles. In 2023, this shifted, and this is the ranking:
- Hyundai Elantra
- Hyundai Sonata
- Kia Optima
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- Kia Soul
- Honda Accord
- Honda Civic
- Kia Forte
- Ford F150 Series Pickup
- Kia Sportage
It’s important to note that this report was released after another NICB trend analysis that indicated the United States is still experiencing a surge in vehicle theft rates that began at the onset of the pandemic. In fact, from 2022 to 2023 there was another increase in vehicle theft, raising 1%.
Tips to help prevent theft of your vehicle
There are a few things you should get into the habit of doing to help prevent your car from becoming a target.
- Park in well-lit areas (ideally in an area protected by security cameras) with your windows shut and your doors locked.
- Remove valuables, and keep any that must remain in the vehicle out of view in places like a glove box, center console, or trunk
- Keep your key fob with you and out of the vehicle
- Don’t leave your vehicle running and unattended, even if it is convenient and you are in a rush
An added layer of protection you may consider is adding a tracking device that can help you locate your car if it does get stolen. An estimated 1/3 of stolen vehicles that are recovered are found on the same day as the theft and nearly half are found on the second day, so if you are able to help locate your vehicle through a tracking device you may be able to increase your chances of finding it.
What to do if your vehicle is stolen
The first thing you should do if you notice your vehicle is missing is to contact the police. They can help you determine whether your car has been towed or stolen and in either case they can assist. You should have your license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), and color, make, and model readily available when you speak with police to expedite the process. If your car is in fact stolen, your auto insurance provider will require a copy of the police report that is filed so all of these details are crucial.
In today’s world, staying one step ahead of car thieves requires a mix of technology, common sense, and vigilance. By following the tips above and having all details about your car handy if you need them, you can greatly reduce your chances of falling victim to car theft and to finding it if your vehicle has been stolen.
