Meet Saint, A Special Rescue That Joined the Freeley Family

Last year, our family welcomed a very special new addition, a rescue dog named Saint. Originally known as Oreo Pie, Saint came into our lives in a way that felt nothing short of serendipitous. As a longtime volunteer, adoption event leader, transport crew member, and Pro-bono attorney for Last Chance Animal Rescue, I’ve crossed paths with countless amazing dogs. But Saint’s story, and the connection we formed, was unique.

How Saint Found His Forever Home

Saint was rescued along with many other dogs in need of loving homes including his mom Honey (being treated for HW) and siblings from Chesterfield SC shelter rescue by St. Francis Farm Animal Sanctuary on his last day before he was to be euthanized. This past fall, I was part of the transport team that brought him to New York. I carried him off the van and handed him to his foster mom, never imagining that this sweet, calm pup would soon become part of my family.

Over the next few weeks, I saw Oreo Pie at adoption events, including a couple at Saint James Brewery. His striking looks and gentle temperament drew me in every time. It wasn’t long before I realized there was something special about him. On a Friday, I decided to take over his fostering to see how he’d fit with my family.

The perfect addition to our pack

Welcoming a new dog into the family is always a thoughtful decision. Our other two dogs, Storm and Sarah, have been treasured members of our pack for years:

  • Storm, our beloved 14-year-old English Golden Retriever, gained fame for his heroic rescue of a baby deer in Port Jefferson Harbor. He was not only a constant companion but also a true hero in every sense.
  • Sarah, now 10, was our first foster pup from Last Chance Animal Rescue—a classic “foster fail” we couldn’t let go. Over the years, she’s been a wonderful big sister to many of the 25 foster dogs we’ve cared for.

When we brought Oreo Pie home for a trial weekend, Storm and Sarah welcomed him with open paws. Within an hour, it felt like they’d always been together. By Sunday, the decision was clear, he was already part of the family.

Since that time, we’ve sadly had to say goodbye to our good boy Storm. Losing him has been incredibly difficult, but we’re so grateful for the love and memories he gave us over the years. His presence will always be felt in our home.

After officially adopting Oreo Pie, we renamed him Saint, inspired by the brewery where we first connected. His name feels fitting, not just because of his calm and sweet demeanor, but also because he’s brought comfort and joy to our family during this bittersweet time. Saint has truly completed our pack in a way that feels meant to be.

A Reminder of the Joy of Rescue

Saint’s story is a reminder of the joy and love that rescue dogs bring into our lives. Each dog we’ve fostered has left a pawprint on our hearts, and seeing them find their forever homes is incredibly rewarding. But sometimes, as with Saint, a dog comes along who is meant to stay.

If you’re considering adopting or fostering, I encourage you to take that leap. You never know when a dog like Saint might cross your path and change your life forever.
