A 2025 Guide to Pet Insurance: Mark Freeley’s Tips for Choosing the Right Coverage

Last year our family welcomed Saint, our third dog, into our lives adding him to our pack alongside Storm and Sarah. As a volunteer, adoption event leader, member of the transport crew that greets weekly arriving dogs and Pro-bono attorney for Last Chance Animal Rescue for over a decade, I knew that when the next special pup came along that it would have to be a rescue. However, it also reignited a question many pet owners face: What’s the best pet insurance for my new pup?

With years of experience insuring Storm and Sarah through Trupanion, I’ve valued the peace of mind their coverage provides. However, Saint’s arrival prompted me to compare options, leading me to evaluate Trupanion and Healthy Paws—two of the most reputable insurers.

Why Pet Insurance Matters

Pet insurance isn’t just for accidents or surgeries, it’s a financial safety net that ensures you can provide the best care possible. Veterinary costs for chronic illnesses or injuries can escalate quickly, and insurance helps offset these expenses, so your pet’s health isn’t limited by your budget.

Trupanion vs. Healthy Paws: My Experience

Storm and Sarah have been covered by Trupanion for 14 and 10 years, respectively. With a 90% reimbursement rate and a per-condition deductible, their coverage has been reliable. However, quotes from Trupanion for coverage for Saint were surprisingly high:

  • $173/month for 90% reimbursement and a $250 deductible (with recovery/rehabilitation coverage rider).
  • Adjusting to a $500 deductible and removing the recovery/rehabilitation rider lowered the cost to $112/month.

Trupanion’s lack of multi-pet discounts and higher premiums made me explore alternatives.

Healthy Paws offered similar accident and illness coverage with significant savings:

  • $48/month for 80% reimbursement and a $250 deductible, including rehabilitation coverage.
  • No lifetime, annual, or per-claim limits, same as Trupanion.
  • Both Healthy Paws and Trupanion are accident, illness, and injury policies.

The comprehensive coverage and lower premium made Healthy Paws an easy choice for Saint.

Top 10 Questions to Ask When Choosing Pet Insurance

As you are exploring pet insurance options, it’s important that you compare each policy and company using these ten questions as a guideline for your decision:

  1. Is the policy renewable regardless of health changes in your pet? Policies should be able to be terminated by the insurance company only for non-payment of premiums.
  2. Will the coverage or exclusions change at renewal? Confirm terms stay consistent.
  3. Are there lifetime coverage limits? Unlimited policies are ideal.
  4. How are reimbursements calculated? Policies should reimburse based on actual vet bills.
  5. What deductibles are offered? For example;
    • Trupanion: Per-condition deductible, great for chronic conditions.
    • Healthy Paws: Annual deductible, better for multiple unrelated issues.
  6. Does the policy cover hereditary and chronic conditions? Look for no exclusions on bilateral conditions.
  7. What reimbursement and deductible options are available? Adjusting these can balance costs.
  8. Does it include rehabilitation services? Coverage for physical therapy can be invaluable.
  9. Are premium increases tied to age or claims? Policies with stable rates are ideal.
  10. What exclusions exist for routine care? Most policies exclude wellness visits or spaying/neutering.

My Recommendation for 2025

Healthy Paws provides excellent value for pet owners seeking comprehensive accident, injury, and illness coverage at reasonable costs. While Trupanion excels for chronic conditions, Healthy Paws’ lower premiums and inclusion of rehabilitation coverage were decisive factors for Saint.

When selecting a policy, prioritize your pet’s needs and get all terms in writing, via email or chat transcripts. With the right insurance, you’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re prepared for any surprises in your pet’s health journey.
